Renting a Car Is the Best Way to Explore the Land of Fire and Ice: Iceland on the road

If there's one thing I would recommend to anyone planning a trip to Iceland, it's this: rent a car and go discovering all the places. I explored the entire island by following the famous Ring Road, and looking back, I honestly can't imagine experiencing Iceland any other way.

Driving gives you something that organized tours simply can't: freedom.

Freedom to stop whenever a waterfall suddenly appears on the side of the road. Freedom to wait a little longer for the perfect light. Freedom to change your plans because you've discovered a hidden canyon, a black sand beach, or simply because you want to spend another hour admiring a glacier.

Iceland isn't a destination where you should rush from one attraction to another. It's a country where the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

One morning you might be watching icebergs floating in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. A few hours later you're driving through lava fields that look like another planet. Then suddenly you're surrounded by green mountains, waterfalls and grazing Icelandic horses.

Every day feels completely different.

One of my favorite aspects of the trip was exactly this constant change of scenery. The landscapes evolve almost every hour, making even long drives incredibly enjoyable. In many countries, driving is simply a way to reach your destination. In Iceland, driving is the destination.

If you're planning to stay on the Ring Road during the warmer months, a standard vehicle is generally sufficient. However, if your itinerary includes Iceland's famous F-roads or the Highlands, you'll need a proper 4x4.
